Joining our practice January 1, 2020, Dr. Catherine Schwender may be the newest urologist at Athens Area Urology, but she has over a decade of experience in the field. After graduating as a Biology major from Emory University in 1995, she continued her education to receive her MD from the Medical College of Georgia in 2001. She then proceeded to complete post-doctoral training and residency for both general surgery and urology at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center from 2001-2007. After completing her residency, she spent three years working at Georgia Urology until moving to the Urology Group of Athens in 2010. Nine years later, and she’s joining the Athens Area Urology team! Dr. Schwender is certified by the American Board of Urology and also holds a subspecialty certification in Female Pelvic Medicine. In her spare time, she loves to ride horses, camp, and cycle. She and her husband, Jim, even own a horse boarding facility in Bogart, GA called Apalachee Meadows. While her mom was a landscape designer, Dr. Schwender’s passion for urological care was passed down from her dad who was also a urologist! We are thrilled to have Dr. Schwender join our team, and we can’t wait for our patients to get to know her!
