Dr. Robert R. Byrne is a native of Houston, Texas. He was an undergraduate at Tulane University, where he graduated magna cum laude. He received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, graduating with High Honors, and was elected as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society as a Junior. He completed his internship and residency in the Division of Urology at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina where he was the recipient of the Schering Academic Achievement Award three years in a row. He has published articles in professional journals and textbooks and has presented his research at several professional meetings. He is a board certified urologist and sees children and adults. In Athens, Dr. Byrne has been active in the local medical society, Crawford W. Long Medical Society serving as a former president. He has served as an alternate board member of the Medical Association of Georgia (MAG) and has been a delegate to the annual meeting of MAG for many years. He has been an active participant in the medical staff of both Athens Regional Medical Center and St Mary’s Hospital. He has been Chair of the Department of Surgery at St Mary’s, and has been the Secretary of the medical staff at St Mary’s. He is an active member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church and has served on the Vestry. Dr. Byrne and his wife, Katherine, have two boys, Nicholas and Jack. He is a Boy Scout leader and enjoys fly fishing and sailing.
