Bladder Cancer Awareness Month

May 4, 2020

Did you know that May is officially designated as Bladder Cancer Awareness Month? This month is dedicated to spreading awareness. Over 68,000 adults are diagnosed with bladder cancer every year in the United States. Since bladder cancer can occur at any time, it is crucial to know the signs and symptoms associated with this form of cancer.

How does bladder cancer form? It starts with abnormal growth of bladder cells that join together and over time, form a tumor. Most originate from the inner lining of the bladder. This is the portion that is exposed to urine in the bladder. The most common symptom of bladder cancer is painless blood in the urine, but it can also be painful for some cases as well. Pelvic pain is also another common sign. Secondary symptoms can include frequent urination and back pain.

There are several components that can increase one’s risk of developing bladder cancer. Chemical exposure in the workplace, smoking, radiation therapy to the pelvis, pelvic pain, and long-standing/recurrent infection can all be major risk factors.
