UroLift® System

October 5, 2020

In honor of September being Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, we wanted to remind our patients of the several prostate-related issues one may face besides cancer throughout their lifetime.

Also known as Benign prostatic hyperplasia, BPH is one of the most common diseases that men face as they become older. Unfortunately, BPH greatly decreases one’s quality of life and often causes lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). The majority of men believe that this is a simple part of “getting older” and often feel embarrassed, suffering from these symptoms for years before seeking medical advice. However, this is not the case at all! Athens Area Urology strives to create a comfortable and welcoming environment, where patients are not afraid to bring up LUTS and other prostate-related concerns.

Medical therapy is one of the most common methods for solving these issues. It provides modest symptom relief, but patients often deal with undesirable side-effects. Meanwhile, interventional procedures that result in removing problematic prostate tissue can cause long-term complications and have a long and intense healing process. If patients do not want to deal with the hassle of having surgery or taking prescription drugs for an extended period of time, this is not a decent compromise.

Thankfully, AAU now offers a new solution---UroLift®. This treatment form involves minimal invasiveness and can aid patients with moderate-severe LUTS problems and secondary BPH issues. The UroLift® System has generally resulted in faster recovery and symptom relief. Additionally, some patients may not need post-treatment catheterization, and the procedure can be done under local anesthesia. No reports of permanent erectile dysfunction, retrograde ejaculation, or sexual dysfunctions were found in the patients who underwent the UroLift® System.
