Many of our patients will need procedures or minor surgeries done to diagnose or treat urological problems. These can be often be performed in the office with topical numbing medications. Some need to be performed in the surgery center / operating room under anesthesia. Athens Area Urology is proud to provide the PRO-NOX Nitrous Oxide Delivery System for patients undergoing urological procedures in the office that need or desire additional relaxation. For patients who are hesitant about having an in-office procedure due to anxiety or pain tolerance levels, PRO-NOX can help. Many are familiar with nitrous oxide as the “Laughing Gas” used at dental offices, but there is also a very long experience with this form of relaxation in Labor and Delivery settings and medical and surgical office settings. It has been used for decades because of its ability to drastically lessen the amount of pain, discomfort and anxiety experienced during procedures and its safety.
The PRO-NOX system creates a mixture of 50% nitrous oxide and 50% oxygen in a simple system that you the patient control using a simple, single use hand-held breathing tube. One of the best parts about the PRO-NOX system is that it is self-administered by the patient. This allows each patient to choose the amount of gas he or she is receiving based on individual needs. Patients are generally aware of the procedure being done and can talk and interact during the procedure, but are not generally bothered by it. The effect of the PRO-NOX begins to take effect within seconds and when done wears off within minutes. Because there are not any lingering effects it is generally safe even to drive home after the sedation.
PRO-NOX is the safest nitrous oxide system available.
Safe and effective – has been used for decades
Rapid onset of action – within seconds
Generally no driver needed – wears off rapidly
Not addictive – not a narcotic or benzodiazepine

The PRO-NOX system involves the use of disposable / single use tubing that is new for each patient. It involves the use of oxygen and nitrous oxide and an expensive pneumatically controlled delivery system. Office sedation is typically not paid for by insurance or Medicare. For patients who choose to have the additional relaxation provided by PRO-NOX, we are able to provide this service for a small cost of $100.
