Vaginal atrophy (also known as atrophic vaginitis, vulvovaginal atrophy, or urogenital atrophy) is an inflammation of the vagina (and the outer urinary tract) due to the thinning of the vaginal mucosa. This results in the vaginal atrophy symptoms of:
vaginal discomfort
vaginal burning
urinary complaints
painful intercourse
The most common cause of vaginal atrophy is a decrease in estrogen which happens naturally as women age. This condition naturally occurs, but can occur in other circumstances that result in decreased estrogen such as breastfeeding and the use of certain medications.
